Picking out your first drum set can often be intimidating and confusing. You’ll find many different options with varying levels of quality.
If you’re really interested in learning the drums, many of these drum kits are virtually useless.
You need a drum set that is both affordable and durable. We found one drum kit that outshines them all in value: the Gammon drum set.

Gammon Drum Set Review – Decent Budget Drum Kit
Out of all the drum sets available in this price range, the Gammon drum set offers the most for your money. This kit is designed for an adult, as it is full-sized.
The Gammon drum set is a five-piece kit that includes two cymbals, a throne, hardware stands, drum key, a kick pedal, and drumsticks.
The finishes include black, metallic blue, wine red, and metallic green.
Now, let me get this right out of the way: this drum kit is designed for practicing and for a student to learn on. The sound and tone of these drums will not be of the same caliber of a higher end drum set.
While you might be able to get the Gammon drum set to sound better with new drum heads and different cymbals, at that point you might as well buy a more expensive drum kit, like the Pearl Roadshow. If this is your first drum kit and you don’t plan on gigging with it, the Gammon drum set is a perfect choice.
How does the Gammon Drum set sound?
Out of all the kits available for under $300, the Gammon drum set is an excellent competitor compared to other similar valued kits.
You will need to learn the fine art of tuning drums.
The Gammon drum set will not sound amazing right out of the box, but you should be able to get it to sound decent with a little effort.
On the contrary, if you’re just beginning to learn how to play the drums, tuning a drum set shouldn’t be a priority.
Playing the drums should already be exciting without worrying about how the drums sound.
Whenever a student purchases a cheaper set of drums, I always recommend that they upgrade to a nice cymbal pack for a better experience playing and learning.
How is the Quality of the Gammon Drum Set?
Due to the price of the Gammon drum set, you can’t expect the world from this kit. While the hardware isn’t the greatest quality in the world, it is absolutely sturdy and durable.
As long as you take care of this drum kit, it will last you for a long time to come.
Expect the drum heads to wear out the fastest. For normal use, expect drum heads to last between a month and a year.
It all depends on how much you practice and how hard you play. Even if the heads are totally dead, you can still play them until they completely rip. The bass drum head usually goes first for me.
Some people have complained that the stool isn’t very sturdy. Some entry-level kits that come with a drum stool often skimp on this piece.
If you find that the drum throne isn’t quality enough for you, there are affordable drum thrones available that you can easily add on to this kit.
My Verdict – Gammon Drum Set
While the Gammon drum set won’t be the best sounding kit in the world, it’s absolutely the perfect starter set for any student or beginner.
There are virtually no other drum sets that offer as much value as this kit does.
If noise is a concern to you and those around you, consider checking out an electronic drum kit instead.
At the bare minimum, you are getting decent drum shells from which you can upgrade cymbals and hardware later on.
This drum kit will last you until you are interested in getting better sounding drums, giving you the chance to see if you really will enjoy playing drums.
For the value and cost, I highly recommend this drum kit.

i bought a gammon set years ago. i literally beat the snot out of these things. they took it.. i consider myself a good drummer. not a pro… i have replaced the cymbals to better ones of course i turned the originals to scrap… other than that i was really happy they took the abuse… i learned to maintain and tune and i am happy to say they are still here. i upgraded the throne. the heads are normal wear items so i wont elaborate on those.. no need to.. just like sticks.. i break them alot.. so what.. for the money i can not complain at all… i upgraded to the next level set but i am for sure keeping this set.. its really a good beginner set for the price. i say go for it.. just do a little upgrades as parts wear out..
